U3A Clarence provides retired, semi-retired and those over 55 years of age with a range of high-quality learning experiences in a relaxed, inclusive environment.

Classes are held on Hobart’s Eastern Shore in Rosny Library’s rooms on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30 till 1.00pm over three terms, with a choice of subjects.

Examples include Art and Painting, Mah Jong, Book Chat, Kaleidoscope with guest presenters talking on topics of interest, Beginners and Advanced French, Tai Chi, Line Dancing and many others. Delivery modes include lectures, tutorials, discussion groups, interactive experiences and self-directed activities. Further details are in the newsletter.

Class Session Times

Session 1: 9.30am – 10.25am

Morning teas are vibrant, interesting opportunities to meet other members, a place to be seen and heard, and hear announcements.

Annual membership of $50 per calendar year, covers all classes. Additionally, there are social outings and excursions planned during the term.

The Cost of Membership

Annual Fees are $50.00 per member per calendar year, and are payable either by credit or debit card via our member portal, or alternatively you may pay by funds transfer at your local bank or via internet banking.

Payment by credit or debit card will enable you to sign onto your membership almost immediately, and then allow you to choose your subject choice provided the class is not already full (You can put yourself on the waiting list). There is a minimal charge for use of your credit or debit card.

We are completely run by volunteers, and using the above automated system which is increasingly being adopted by other Australian U3A organisations, will mean much less work for our treasurer, enrolment person, and secretary.

Benefits of U3A Clarence membership

You must be a current member of U3A Clarence to participate in all our classes and social activities. Once a member you may access as many classes as you would like, provided class times do not conflict - there are no further class costs except for materials (where relevant).

Please note that some social activities may incur an additional cost, for example, for bus trips, lunch provided, etc..

Membership is for a calendar year (1 January to 31 December).

Our annual fee is currently $50.00 per person.

You can pay your membership fees online by credit card or direct deposit to the U3A Clarence bank account. Payment by credit or debit card should mean that enrolment will be quickly and automatically acknowledged by email.

U3A Clarence is run entirely by its member committee who are volunteers elected each January by members of the organisation. Payment by credit or debit card would help us to run the system more efficiently, and with less stress for us, particularly at the beginning of the year and at the beginning of each term when class enrolments take place, and when new people may wish to join us.

We will appreciate it if you feel able to pay by card, however, we know that not everyone uses the internet or has a credit/ debit card, so we are retaining the option of bank transfer for membership payment.

Accessing the Member Portal

You will be able to:

View your membership details.
Update your contact details.
Renew and pay for your membership online.
View and enrol in classes (from mid January).
Register for special events on the system.
View and print a statement of your membership account, including classes you are in.
Pay outstanding invoices.
Print a name tag, (if you need to).

You Need to Register a Password

To use the member portal you must register a password. The password can be your existing U3A password, but you will have to register it.

Click on the red member portal tab (below) and follow the instructions. (Couples with shared email addresses will have to use their U3A member numbers rather than shared email address to register).
Once in the Member Portal click on the REGISTER button on the right.
Enter either your email address or member number in the box.
You will be sent a security code to your email address to enter on the page. (The code is valid for 24 hours.)
On registering you will be asked to put in a PASSWORD or PIN. RECORD IT safely.

WELL DONE! You are now registered!

Once registered as a member on the member portal you will receive an invoice for membership subscription by email. There is a blue link for debit/credit card payments to click on the invoice . On payment you will receive an automated receipt through your email. Alternatively, {before March 2025} scroll up to the “renewing member” tab and follow the instructions for your 2025 payment.

CLASS ENROLMENT

If you are registered to use the member portal it is easier. Use Register for events/classes to enrol.

Use My Classes to view and /or print your classes.

If your membership has expired or will have expired by the date the class is scheduled to run you will be sent a Member Renewal Invoice to your registered email address. Your enrolment will not be finalised until your membership payment is received.

If you are not a current member of U3A Clarence then you will be redirected to the New Member Application page where you will be able to fill out your details and pay your subscription. Your enrolment will not be finalised until your payment is received.

If the class is full then the Enrol button will show this. You will be placed on a waiting list for the class and as places become available during the term you will be contacted to see if you wish to be moved onto the Enrolled list.

If you need to withdraw from a class because you cannot attend it, please email membershipu3aclarence@gmail.com, use this email also if you wish to change classes for some reason.

What is a U3A?

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community - those in their third 'age' of life. The 'third age' is defined by a time in your life (not necessarily chronological) where you have the opportunity to undertake learning for its own sake.

University of the 3rd Age (U3A) started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973. It was started by Prof. Pierre Vellas. In France the Third Age University is mostly associated with a local university.

By the early 1980s, the scheme reached the United Kingdom where its nature was radically changed to be more a self-help organisation. This model is also used in Australia, Cyprus, Dominica, New Zealand and South Africa where it was recognised that most people of retirement age have something to contribute and the emphasis has been on sharing, without formal educational links.

Many English-speaking countries have followed this model, whereas continental European countries have mostly followed the French model. For historical reasons, lifelong learning institute is the term used in the United States for organisations and similar groups. There is no universally accepted model for the U3A.

The first Australian U3A opened in Melbourne in 1984 with many other U3As rapidly opening across the country. There are now about 300 U3As in Australia, with about 100,000 members. The Australian model has U3As established as autonomous groups, with their own administration and curriculum according to the needs and interests of each group.

Why is attending a U3A good for my mental and physical health?

Social connection is important for mental and physical health and links to our sense of self, group identities, sense of purpose and quality of life. How we experience and view the world and how we were raised within our family, or our culture, can shape our understanding and perception of being and connecting in the world.

The evidence tells us:

1 in 4 Australians, aged 12 - 89 years, experience 'problematic' loneliness (approximately 5 million people).

Some research indicates that Australians over 65 years are often less lonely than younger people and experience less depression, social anxiety and are more engaged socially.

A recent survey by the Federation of nine Councils on the Ageing (COTA) across Australia suggests that around one quarter of those aged 50 years and over were not content with their friendships and relationships, 5% hadn't had contact with anyone in a week and 8% felt lonely all or most of the time.

The same survey indicates that those over 50 years find support for their wellbeing (and mental health) through family and friends, exercising, good nutrition, hobbies, connecting with nature and through staying connected with digital technology.

Connecting with friends, family, acquaintances and even one-off or semi-regular casual interactions, can assist in preventing or alleviating social isolation and the feeling of loneliness. Good health adds life to years.

What happens at a U3A?

U3As provide opportunities for you to try something new, make friends and share your knowledge and skills with others. Courses range from physical fitness to desk-based classes, language studies, art and craft classes, social activities and more.

Do I need to be a member to attend any courses or activities?

Yes - only financial members are eligible to attend any courses or activities.

May I try a class prior to joining U3A?

Prospective members may try one class for free prior to joining.

How much does it cost?

Membership costs $50 per year which covers all classes that you enrol in, though some classes such as art classes may require a small additional fee, normally established by the class tutor. There are usually additional fees for excursions and social activities such as luncheons.

Where is the Clarence U3A located?

All classes are in various rooms in one location - at Bligh Street at the Rosny Library, near Eastlands Shopping Centre, just past the Bellerive police station.

How do I get there?

Eastlands Shopping Centre is served by frequent bus services on Hobart's eastern shore.

Car Parking?

Parking is free at the Rosny Library, but many spaces are limited to 2 hours. Free parking for up to 4 hours is available in the multi storey carpark at Eastlands, about 300 metres away.

Do I need to study for exams?

Part of the fun of attending a U3A is that there are no exams or tests but learning for the joy of learning.

What educational level do I need to have to go to the U3A?

The U3A model does not require any prior educational level.

Are children able to accompany members to a class or activity?

No we regret that no child can accompany a member to a class or activity.

Is there a limit to the number of classes I can join?

Your membership allows you to join an unlimited number of classes and activities pending availability and subject to clashes of classes. There is a waitlist for some classes. There is no fee per class - your membership fee covers all classes. There may be a cost for materials required for a particular class.

Can I join the U3A at any time of the year?

Membership fee of $50 applies for enrolment in any calendar year, whether for 3 terms or only one although those joining after October 1 are granted membership until the end of the following year. This greatly simplifies things for committee members responsible for our finances. If your membership is not paid by February 28 of the membership year you will need to rejoin in order to attend.

How much time will I need to set aside?

Most classes run for approximately 1 hour, and are always held on Monday and Wednesday mornings between 9:30am and 1:00pm. Social activities such Day Trips or Luncheons are generally more leisurely.

What if I can't attend a class or wish to drop out?

Please advise the tutor or the office if you are unable to attend. Three consecutive unexplained absences from a class will result in a deletion from the class or activity. As some classes have a waiting list, members are requested to advise the tutor or the U3A office if they no longer wish to attend. You can also advise absence through your Member Portal.
