Welcome to the University of the 3rd Age (U3A) Clarence

U3A Clarence provides retired, semi-retired and those over 55 years of age with a range of high-quality learning experiences in a relaxed, inclusive environment.

Classes are held on Hobart’s Eastern Shore in Rosny Library’s rooms on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30 till 1.00pm over three terms, with a choice of subjects.  Since 2025 we have also begun offering some classes at other venues on other days of the week, for example, Croquet and walking groups.

Examples include Art and Painting, Mah Jong, Book Chat, Kaleidoscope with guest presenters talking on topics of interest, Beginners and Advanced French, Tai Chi, Line Dancing and many others. Delivery modes include lectures, tutorials, discussion groups, interactive experiences and self-directed activities.

Being part of U3A Clarence also allows you to take part in some excursions and special events.

Class Session Times

Session 1: 9.30am – 10.25am

Morning tea: 10.25am - 10.45am

Session 2: 10.50am – 11.50am

Session 3: 12.00pm – 1.00pm

Morning teas are vibrant, interesting opportunities to meet other members, a place to be seen and heard, and hear announcements.

September 20th update: Annual membership covers all classes.  Additionally, there are social outings and excursions planned during the term.  Our membership will be $60 from October 1st, 2026.  If you pay after then it automatically includes membership for 2027, so at this stage of the year we recommend you join or renew from 1st October.  If you wish to attend classes during the next week this is possible - we allow people to try out a class or two before joining.

The Cost of Membership

Annual Fees are $50.00 per member per calendar year, increasing to $60 for 2027 due to increases in our costs.  This is payable either by credit or debit card, or alternatively you may pay by funds transfer at your local bank or via internet banking. As of the 1st October, 2026 payments of membership fees also cover membership for 2027.  If you are just considering joining or renewing it would be a great idea to leave it until the 1st October since it is very close. 

Payment by credit or debit card will enable you to sign onto your membership almost immediately, and then allow you to choose your classes straight away.  The charge for use of this facility will be charged directly to U3A rather than being paid by members in the near future.

We are completely run by volunteers, and using the above automated system commonly used by other Australian U3A organisations means reduced work for our treasurer, enrolment person, and secretary.
